This was the first year we grew garlic and had success. We tried to plant it in the Spring a couple years ago and it flopped. So when we planted the cloves last fall, we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. What we dug up this summer brought huge smiles to both our faces!
The varieties we grew were all hard-neck garlic. We tried Elephant, German Extra Hardy, Music, and Russian Red. The most consistent this year was the Music variety, but they are all lovely. The flavor of fresh garlic, like most produce straight from the garden, is extraordinary. We plan to store most of the garlic, so you won’t see it at market. Some of our CSA shares were lucky to get a head this week. I hope they enjoy it like we do. Next year, though, we will be sure to plant plenty so you all have a chance to try it.
