B and G Produce is excited to offer its second season of CSAs! Each weekly basket will include a variety of produce and recipes. Some of the items we’re growing this year will be specifically for our CSA members and not available at the Capital City Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. We’re adding two weeks this season with an anticipated start date of May 24^th and providing weekly baskets into the month of November.

What is a CSA? Several years ago, groups of consumers and farmers created partnerships to create mutually beneficial and ecologically sound local food systems. Consumers benefit by receiving regular deliveries of fresh, seasonal produce grown locally by someone they know. Growers benefit by receiving income in the off season to help with the costs of seeds, equipment, and labor.

With a B and G CSA share you’ll experience seasonality at its best. Unlike supermarket produce, often chosen for its ability to withstand transport and uniformity, the varieties we grow are chosen for flavor. Both new and familiar items will make appearances in the basket; arugula, heirloom radishes, and nettles in the spring. As the season moves along you’ll get to try unique and heirloom types of lettuces, beans, beets, carrots, and summer squash. We’re also planting many types of tomatoes and peppers, some familiar and some unusual but all very delicious. Late summer and into fall you’ll have eggplant, cabbages, winter squashes, pumpkins, carrots, greens, and potatoes. Below is a photo of a full share in September 2010.

Pick up will be every Tuesday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Dishes. If you are unable to pick up your share, please arrange for someone to pick it up for you. Any shares not picked up will be donated or composted.

Full share members will receive a 25% discount, over $725 of produce throughout the season and half share members will receive a 20% discount, more than $340 of produce. Interested? Shares are limited so reserve yours as soon as possible.
